Vinny’s secret messages are mixed into his stories

For parents and teachers…
Meal time is family time!!

Both the book and the blog contain a healthy dose of information on food and how it works in our bodies. This page pulls things together from my book and my blog, so you can find information on specific foods and nutrients easily.

Science is continuously refining what we know about food and nutrition. What should we believe when the facts are changing so quickly? How can we best cope with picky eaters or manage people’s allergies in the family… or feed our families well on a budget?

Vinny’s answer: We learn to understand how food feeds our body.  We adapt when new facts arise. Then, we choose well to meet our own personal needs and tastes.

Healthy eating guides and family values
are well blended in Vinny’s book
Cook Up A Story

In the following links, Vinny suggests a few multiple-choice questions you can ask your kids as you read the stories in his book together. It’s an interactive way to help your family get the most from the tales. Help children find some truths in Vinny’s stories. Show them how the stories link to great ideas in the kitchen for healthy eating and in the family for happy living. Each of the chapter titles ties the story to its nonfiction components.

  1. Body basics are introduced through an original fairy tale, Wauna’s song
  2. Pump it features the story Birthday bumps, a hair-raising adventure about boys on the river, frogs, and wishes gone bad
  3. Meal time is family time offers up a family’s ghost story, Little Miss Ellie and the princess’s pie, that helps a girl learn to value her mixed heritage
  4. Friendly fiber is pushed along by a science project gone amiss in Prune puff smooths the way
  5. Milk’s got it features teen angst and young love in More Milk Please
  6. Mood foods caps off the book with Melting moments, a heart-warming story about cooking, reading, and family legacy.

Thanks for your words of encouragement, Chef Randall! I like your blog too and found it full of useful info and great cooking techniques. I’d be happy to follow your blog and hope you’ll do the same :). Perhaps you might even be tempted to download a copy of my book in electronic format? It’s pretty reasonable in price and I’d love to hear what a professional chef thinks of it, as a means to encourage kids and their families to think about healthy eating.
